Looking for a strategically located area? Camperdown, set within the uMgungundlovu District Municipality, ticks all the right boxes. This area is situated along the N3 corridor, connecting Durban and Gauteng. As Gauteng is the economic heart of South Africa and Durban holds the busiest port, Camperdown is attractively positioned between these two points.

Camperdown boasts a range of commercial and industrial properties. Whether you're after vacant land, offices, warehouses, or factories, the area will ensure your business's success.

History

Camperdown was named after the British naval battle and victory over the Dutch in 1797. The town first began as a farm - also named Camperdown - in 1865. The area saw prominent urban developments. In 1880, railway lines were built, connecting the area to Botha's Hill and Pietermaritzburg. In 1901, the area's waterworks were completed.

Today, Camperdown is a popular site for logistics, manufacturing, and retail businesses. These include Trident Refractory Specialists, Manchem, AfriSam, and Dunlop Zone. In 2020, Grindrod Ltd, a freight logistics and financial services company, began construction of a state-of-the-art AutoPort in the area.

Commercial/industrial hotspots

While you will find businesses throughout Camperdown, arguably the most desirable industrial and commercial area lies around Umlaas Road. This point of the town provides easy access to important transport routes. It links to the South Coast via the R603, a road which travels all the way down to Kingsburgh. It also links to the N3, the established national route which connects Durban and Gauteng. Umlaas Road also has access to the rail network, providing another means of distribution. The available space for development in the area has sparked interest in companies which require warehouse facilities.

Infrastructure

Industrial and commercial businesses within Camperdown enjoy well-maintained infrastructure, with good access to airports, the N3, and railway stations. Camperdown is roughly 24 km from Pietermaritzburg, 56 km from Durban, and 22 km from Pietermaritzburg Airport. SANRAL has even recognised the economic value of the N3 corridor. In 2018, it launched the first phase of a project to upgrade and improve conditions of this route - a huge benefit for Camperdown businesses.

Transport

Because of Camperdown's fantastic location, it is easily accessible from Pietermaritzburg, Durban, and surrounding areas like Cato Ridge, Richmond, and Ashburton. Your staff can make use of private transportation, municipal buses, or the taxi service which operates throughout the area.

Amenities

Camperdown is fairly developed, with many key amenities useful to industrial businesses in the area. There are Engen and Shell petrol stations, a hardware store, a vehicle repair and maintenance shop, truck dealers, a licensing office, and a police station.

Staff can buy lunches at the SuperSpar or grab a quick takeaway at the local KFC. With varied menus and wonderful ambiences, The Club House Camperdown and Tala Restaurant are ideal for sitdown meals.

If a medical emergency should arise, the Hibiscus Cato Ridge Private Hospital is only 6 km away. However, there are also medical practitioners within Camperdown and in surrounding areas like Hammarsdale and Hillcrest.
